Goodbye to the Overton Family

As part of our Christmas Program last night, we said a final goodbye to the Overton family who are moving to southern Indiana this week.  As I said before I prayed for them, they are leaving our church but they are not leaving the Lord!

Kerry has taken a different position within his company and this has necessitated the move.  As much as I hate seeing them leave our church family, I am delighted God, in His infinite wisdom and providence, has opened this door and guided them to this decision.  He has a plan for them and, for now, it involves southern Indiana.

May our Lord graciously bless Kerry, Anne, Isabelle, and Simon as they serve Him in their new mission field!

December Messages

Last week we completed John 4. If the Lord permits, that will be my final 2010 message from the Gospel of John. We will resume with chapter 5 in January.

For the next 4 weeks I intend to focus on the birth of our Lord. Recently I saw this posting from another pastor:

"A new sermon series begins on Dec. 5th ... called "Christmas at the Movies." I'm going to use movie clips from popular Christmas movies to help us undertand who we are as Christ followers. First up in the series is 'The Santa Clause.'"

Well, I will NOT be using movie clips but instead will use the Word of God found in Galatians 4:1-7. I challenge you to bring your Bible and examine God's Word with me during this holiday season.

"The Stewardship of Grace": Sermon Outline for October 17, 2010

For those who have an interest, here is the outline of the message I preached yesterday.  This was a very difficult message for me to preach.  Perhaps you noticed how much I moved around on the platform during the sermon.  God was using my own words to step on my toes!  Each of us often fail to use the spiritual/grace gift God has given to us from time to time and, as a result, we let down the body of Christ rather than building up the body.  We also fail to glorify our Lord and present Him properly to the lost around us.  Thank goodness our Lord is a merciful and gracious God who forgives us.

So, let us repent and move forward in serving Christ!

“The Stewardship of Grace”

A.  Stewards are to Use the Gifts
B.  Stewards are to Use the Gifts to Serve
C.  Stewards are to Use the Gifts to Serve
     Each Other
D.  Stewards are to Use the Gifts
     Properly
E.  Stewards are to Improve the Gifts

III.  Understand the Mission of this Grace (v. 11b)
A.  We are to Bring Glory to God.
B.  We are to Bring Glory to God through
      Jesus Christ.

"Filling the Gaps"

As most of our church family knows, the Overtons are moving to Indiana before the end of 2010.  While we will greatly miss them, they see this move as the work of the Lord and, therefore, we rejoice with them!

Nevertheless, Kerry and Anne presently fill several positions in our church and we need someone to step in and "fill the gaps" resulting from their departure.  Both teach Sunday School classes, both serve on various committees, Anne maintains our Sunday bulletins and Wednesday prayer sheets, and Kerry is our church treasurer.  We need to have capable folks ready to step in and fill these important positions when the time comes.  In fact, it would be helpful for those volunteers to spend a few weeks working with Kerry and Anne so they can get a handle on what is required in these positions.

If you believe the Lord would have you serve in one or more of these positions:

1.  Please contact our Sunday School Director, Jon Bounds, if you would like to teach a Sunday School class.
2.  Please contact Sandy Brandel or Anne, our Nominating Committee, for the other positions.

If you have any questions on any of these positions, I strongly recommend you talk with Kerry and/or Anne.

Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God

I was asked about the quote from Jonathan Edwards' famous sermon, "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" (preached in 1741 during the Great Awakening). Here is the text of the portion I quoted during the sermon:

So that thus it is that natural men are held in the hand of God over the pit of hell; they have deserved the fiery pit, and are already sentenced to it; and God is dreadfully provoked: his anger is as great towards them as those that are actually suffering the execution of the fierceness of his wrath in hell; and they have done nothing in the least to appease or abate that anger, neither is God in the least bound by any promise to hold them up for one moment. The devil is waiting for them, hell is gaping for them, the flames gather and flash about them, and swallow them up; the fire pent up in their own hearts is struggling to break out; and they have no interest in any Mediator; there are no means within reach that can be any security to them. In short they have no refuge, nothing to take hold of; all that preserves them at any moment is the mere arbitrary will, and uncovenanted, unobliged forebearance of an incensed God.

You may read the entire sermon at the website here.
