“The Angelic Message of Christmas – Part 2: The Promised Person”

Luke 1:26-38

Proposition:  At this time of year we often focus on many things:  family, food, decorations, gifts, and music.  But often we fail to consider, to reflect, and to ponder the most important thing:  God’s promised person.

Transition:  This morning we examine the message of the angel Gabriel to Mary and note 5 promises of God about this promised person.

I.  The Promised Person Would be Human. (v31)  

A.  He Would Be Conceived as a Human.

B.  He Would Be Born as a Human.

C.  He Would Be Named as a Human.

II.  The Promised Person Would be Highly Exalted.  (vv. 32-33)

A.  He Would Be Great.

B.  He Would Be the Son of the Most High.

C.  He Would Be Given the Throne.

D.  He Would Reign Forever.

III.  The Promised Person Would Be Heavenly.  (v. 35)

A.  His Birth is the Result of God the Spirit.

B.  His Birth is the Result of God the Father.

C.  He is the Son of God.

IV.  The Promised Person Would Be Holy.  (v. 35)

A.  He is Holy at His Conception and Birth.

B.  He is Holy Throughout His Life.

V.  The Promised Person Would be Hope.

Schism!

John 7:40-44

Proposition:  Jesus and His message divides those who hear it.

Transition:  This morning we focus on this division by examining 3 characteristics of it found in our text.

I.  This division is a result of Jesus and His message.  (vv. 40,43)

   A.  The division is the result of the message of Christ. (40)

   B.  The division is, ultimately, the result of Christ himself. (43)

II.  This division occurs among a variety of individuals. 

   A.  He divides crowds.

   B.  He divides organizations.

      1.  He divides government.s

      2.  He divides religions.

   C.  He divides families.

III.  This division is evident in the responses of the listeners. (vv. 40-44)  

   A.  Some receive Him. (40-41)

      1.  Some receive Him as a religious leader. (40)

      2.  Some receive Him as Messiah. (41)

   B.  Some reject Him. (41, 42, 44)

      1.  Some reject Him due to lack of knowledge. (41-42)

      2.  Some reject Him due to hatred. (44)

   C.  None can ignore Him.

      1.  His claims are inclusive.

      2.  His claims are personal.

"I Know Him"

John 7:25-31

To know Jesus is to know God.  To know God is to know Jesus.
To worship Jesus is to worship God.  To worship God is to worship Jesus.

Proposition: Let us be absolutely certain we know Jesus, the Messiah, God in the flesh, sent by the Father on a mission of mercy.

Transition: Consider this truth in 2 observations from our text.

I.  See Those Who are Confused.
   A.  They are Regular People
      1.  They are Men and Women Like Us
      2.  They have Passions Like Us

They are just like us.

   B.  They are Religious People
      1.  They have Religious Advantages
         a.  They have the Word of God
         b.  They have their religious traditions
         c.  They have their godly history

      So do we.

      2.  They have Religious Education
         a.  They know a Messiah will come
         b.  They expect a Messiah will come
         c.  They were taught how Messiah would come.

      So do we.

      3.  They have Religious Experience
         a.  They have observed circumcision
         b.  They have received ceremonial washings
         c.  They have participated in synagogue services
         d.  They have joined in annual festivals.

      So do we.
      WE ARE JUST LIKE THEM!

   C.  They Do NOT KNOW GOD (28b)

      DO WE KNOW GOD?

II.  See the Evidences of Their Condition
   A.  They Consider Others and Not Themselves (25-26)

   B.  They Consider Their Knowledge Superior to God's Word (27)

   C.  They Responded to Jesus with Disregard (30)

   D.  They are Waiting for Something More (31)

   E.  Their Faith is NOT Saving Faith (31)

Is our faith saving faith?  Do we know Him?
