Our next “5th Sunday Q & A” Fellowship is scheduled for this Sunday evening at 6 p.m. following our Discipleship Training hour. Bring a snack to share and a drink plus any questions you may have and join us for an hour of Q & A and fellowship!
This is a very informal time but if you have a question but do not wish to ask it publically, jot it down and place it in the container on the table in the church foyer Sunday morning.

Statement of Faith

VII. Baptism and the Lord's Supper
Christian baptism is the immersion of a believer in water in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. It is an act of obedience symbolizing the believer's faith in a crucified, buried, and risen Saviour, the believer's death to sin, the burial of the old life, and the resurrection to walk in newness of life in Christ Jesus. It is a testimony to his faith in the final resurrection of the dead. Being a church ordinance, it is prerequisite to the privileges of church membership and to the Lord's Supper.
The Lord's Supper is a symbolic act of obedience whereby members of the church, through partaking of the bread and the fruit of the vine, memorialize the death of the Redeemer and anticipate His second coming.
Sermon Extras
My second fact in my message yesterday concerning those who make up the local church was that we are beloved. I noted that it is God who loves us and He does so sacrificially as demonstrated by the death of His only Son. I also mentioned this love God pours upon us is an eternal love. I based this on the form of the word translated “loved” in the ESV.
In the original, this word is actual a participle from the word “agapao”, the verb form of “agape” (love). I believe I would translate the beginning of this verse as “knowing brothers HAVING BEEN LOVED by God”. The form of this participle indicates the love God gives to us is a love given in the past and the results of that love continues forever.
In other words, God, from all eternity, place His love upon those who would be His children (the elect) and that love will never, ever be removed. Here again we have evidence of the perseverance of the saints (or security of the believer). For how could a true child of God ever lose his eternal salvation if the love of His heavenly Father is always upon Him?
Pastor’s Postscripts
During a brief conversation this weekend, someone mentioned to me, with some concern, the low attendance we have been seeing. There are some legitimate reasons why we are down somewhat. It is summertime and folks are taking vacation. We also have some members battling illnesses which keep them at home. Here are some brief thoughts on addressing our low attendance.
1. If you are a member, do your best to be here every Sunday. The Lord wants you in the local church and in public worship.
2. If you have friends, family, co-workers, etc., who are not attending a church, invite them to attend ours.
3. Make an effort to share the Gospel with those lost souls you encounter during the week. Whether they receive Christ or not, invite them to join you Sunday here at Bethesda.

CHURCH PICNIC!
Join us for our annual summer picnic on Saturday, June 22nd! Please bring an item for grilling along with a side or dessert. The church will provide drinks, ice and condiments. Weather permitting, we'll also have a small pool set up for the kids, while the adults relax, kick back and enjoy some quality fellowship time. We may even get a couple of games going!
Grilling starts at 12:00 PM, so we hope to see you there!

In the opening verse of 1 Thessalonians, Paul addresses the church by writing,
“...to the church of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ”.
Some of the older translations put the preposition “in” before both “God the Father” and “the Lord Jesus Christ”. However, the autograph (the original writing) only contains the first preposition. Paul is teaching all who read this verse at least two important truths.
1. God the Father and Jesus Christ are on the same “plane”. They are co-equals. The attributes of God the Father are the same as those of Jesus Christ. In other words, Jesus is, indeed, God in the flesh.
2. The church (a reference to saved individuals, not to a building) is established in, grounded in, built upon God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Only the true followers of Christ comprise the local church.

This church is an autonomous body, operating through democratic processes under the Lordship of Jesus Christ. In such a congregation, members are equally responsible. Its Scriptural officers are pastors and deacons.
The New Testament speaks also of the church as the body of Christ which includes all of the redeemed of all the ages.

In those opening verses of 1 Thessalonians, Paul notes the hope in Christ the Thessalonian Christians have. He recognizes this hope in them because it has produced endurance. They endure; they persevere even in the midst of persecution and suffering.
Many Baptists are quite comfortable with the doctrine known as the “security of the believer”. This doctrine is Biblical. Passages such as Philippians 1:6 (my favorite verse) and 2 Timothy 1:12 support this teaching. If you have truly been saved (born again) then you are secure in Christ. You WILL have an eternal home in glory with Him.
But the Bible also teaches endurance or what is commonly known theologically as the “Perseverance of the Saints”. For a person to actually have that eternal home in glory they MUST persevere in Christ; they must endure. This teaching is revealed in Matthew 10:22, Matthew 24:13, 2 Timothy 2:12, and Hebrews 10:35-36. You MUST endure if you are to have an eternal home in glory.
While these teachings appear to contradict one another, they are actually complements. The true believer will persevere as a result of the hope that is in them, namely Jesus. Those who wander from the faith during their journey here on earth are, most likely, those who were never truly born again.
Are you steadfast like the Thessalonians? Are you enduring in your faith? Are you persevering because of the hope you have in Christ?

Good Morning, Bethesda!
Despite our low attendance, it was obvious that the Spirit was present during our service yesterday. There were at least 9 members out on vacation, another who was required to work, and yet another at home with a child. Our prayers are with each one who was unable to attend and hoping to see everyone next Sunday morning.

V. God's Purpose of Grace
Election is the gracious purpose of God, according to which He regenerates, sanctifies, and glorifies sinners. It is consistent with the free agency of man and comprehends all the means in connection with the end. It is a glorious display of God's sovereign goodness, and is infinitely wise, holy, and unchangeable. It excludes boasting and promotes humility.
All true believers endure to the end. Those whom God has accepted in Christ, and sanctified by His Spirit, will never fall away from the state of grace, but shall persevere to the end. Believers may fall into sin through neglect and temptation, whereby they grieve the Spirit, impair their graces and comforts, bring reproach on the cause of Christ, and temporal judgments on themselves, yet they shall be kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation.
“The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost.”
1 Timothy 1:15
Sermon Extras
In verses 2 & 3, we have a brief explanation on Paul’s methodology for sharing the Gospel. “... he REASONED with them from the Scriptures, EXPLAINING and PROVING...”. A couple of observations on these verses:
1. What Paul was doing in the synagogue on the Sabbath was reasoning with the Jews. The word is dialegomai meaning “to speak through or with”, hence, “to converse or even to debate. Our English word “dialogue” comes from this word. This same word was used by Greek authors to describe Socrates method of teaching.
2. The words “explaining” and “proving” in verse 3 tell us how Paul accomplished his “reasoning”. Both words indicate this was an on-going activity, not a one time thing. Sharing the Scriptures with the lost often require more than one attempt.
3. The word “explaining” means “to open the mind”. It is the word Luke used to describe how Jesus opened the minds of the disciples on the road to Emmaus (Lk. 24:32). Luke also uses the word concerning Lydia in Acts 16:14 when he writes, “The Lord opened her heart to pay attention to what was said by Paul.” Paul uses the Scriptures, not sad stories, inspirational music, or altar calls, to open the mind of the lost to Christ.
Concerning the Jews in Thessalonika, Dr. A. T. Robertson wrote:
“... this small group of Jews were given Paul and Silas by God’s grace.”

Good Morning, Bethesda!
We are thankful God protected our facilities on Friday night as the tornado passed nearby. Also, we praise the Lord there were no fatalities or serious injuries from the storm.
As of this writing, we are aware of only one church member who suffered loss and that’s brother Tom. His house was significantly damaged and it will take some time before he and his children are able to return to it as their home. Please keep him in your prayers and, if there is any way you may be able to help him out, please do so. Thank you to those men who have already been to the house to help him out.

IV. Salvation
Salvation involves the redemption of the whole man, and is offered freely to all who accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour, who by His own blood obtained eternal redemption for the believer. In its broadest sense salvation includes regeneration, sanctification, and glorification.
1. Regeneration, or the new birth, is a work of God's grace whereby believers become new creatures in Christ Jesus. It is a change of heart wrought by the Holy Spirit through conviction of sin, to which the sinner responds in repentance toward God and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
Repentance and faith are inseparable experiences of grace. Repentance is a genuine turning from sin toward God. Faith is the acceptance of Jesus Christ and commitment of the entire personality to Him as Lord and Saviour. Justification is God's gracious and full acquittal upon principles of His righteousness of all sinners who repent and believe in Christ. Justification brings the believer into a relationship of peace and favor with God.
2. Sanctification is the experience, beginning in regeneration, by which the believer is set apart to God's purposes, and is enabled to progress toward moral and spiritual perfection through the presence and power of the Holy Spirit dwelling in him. Growth in grace should continue throughout the regenerate person's life.
3. Glorification is the culmination of salvation and is the final blessed and abiding state of the redeemed.

To those who attended Sunday, thank you for your attentiveness during the message. For a variety of reasons, I had great difficulty in delivering this Sunday’s sermon. But God is good and His Word powerful!
This Sunday we begin a new series. We’ll take a look at the Thessalonian church by working our way through Paul’s letters to them. We’ll begin this series, however, not in 1 Thessalonians but in the book of Acts. This Sunday we examine “The Beginnings of a Local Church.”

We are thankful God protected our facilities on Friday night as the tornado passed nearby. Also, we praise the Lord there were no fatalities or serious injuries from the storm.
As of this writing, we are aware of only one church member who suffered loss and that’s brother Tom. His house was significantly damaged and it will take some time before he and his children are able to return to it as their home. Please keep him in your prayers and, if there is any way you may be able to help him out, please do so. Thank you to those men who have already been to the house to help him out.

Outreach Effort
The Outreach Committee has provided church members with bags containing energy and/or granola bars. Each bar contains a Bible verse plus the church’s address and phone number. Please take one or more bags and pass out individual bars to those you meet who have a need. For example, if you pull up to a light and a person is asking for money, hand him a bar.
The bags are located on the table in the foyer.

IV. Salvation
Salvation involves the redemption of the whole man, and is offered freely to all who accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour, who by His own blood obtained eternal redemption for the believer. In its broadest sense salvation includes regeneration, sanctification, and glorification.
1. Regeneration, or the new birth, is a work of God's grace whereby believers become new creatures in Christ Jesus. It is a change of heart wrought by the Holy Spirit through conviction of sin, to which the sinner responds in repentance toward God and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
Repentance and faith are inseparable experiences of grace. Repentance is a genuine turning from sin toward God. Faith is the acceptance of Jesus Christ and commitment of the entire personality to Him as Lord and Saviour. Justification is God's gracious and full acquittal upon principles of His righteousness of all sinners who repent and believe in Christ. Justification brings the believer into a relationship of peace and favor with God.
2. Sanctification is the experience, beginning in regeneration, by which the believer is set apart to God's purposes, and is enabled to progress toward moral and spiritual perfection through the presence and power of the Holy Spirit dwelling in him. Growth in grace should continue throughout the regenerate person's life.
3. Glorification is the culmination of salvation and is the final blessed and abiding state of the redeemed.
Saturday, June 8
Men, bring your breakfast and join us for some fellowship and study this Saturday beginning at 8 a.m. We’ll fellowship for 15-20 minutes and then continue our study of Dr. Whitney’s book. Even if you have been unable to attend in the past, join us this Saturday.
Our church council will meet at 9 a.m. this Saturday to discuss and schedule upcoming activities. If you are on the council and cannot attend, please ask someone to take your place.
